MOSQUE OF AD-DIR' / ASH-SHAYKHAYN

The stop before Uhud.

The encampment before the battle

The night before the Battle of Uhud (3 AH), the Prophet ﷺ camped with his army in an area called Ash-Shaykhayn — "the two elders." The commemorative mosque marks this historic location. (Ibn Hisham · Sîrah)

The night before Uhud

That night, the Prophet ﷺ conducted a final inspection of his troops. He sent back 14 youths who were not of age to fight — including Abdullah ibn Umar (15 years old) and Zayd ibn Thabit (13 years old).

However, he accepted two youths: Samurah ibn Jundub and Rafi' ibn Khadij — one because he had won a friendly wrestling match against the other, demonstrating his strength. (Sahih al-Bukhari no. 4097)
