JABAL AR-RUMAT (MOUNT OF THE ARCHERS)

The mountain that changed the fate of a battle.

A hill and a lesson for eternity

At the foot of Mount Uhud, slightly ahead, there is a small hill. Not spectacular. Not high — just a few dozen meters. And yet, it is here that the fate of one of the most famous battles in Islam was decided.

If you are looking for a brutal, clear lesson, one that can be passed down to any generation, on the importance of obeying an order, it is here that it is etched in stone. Battle of Uhud, year 3 of the Hijra (625 CE).

The authentic narrative

Al-Bara ibn Azib (رضي الله عنه) reports: "The Prophet ﷺ placed Abdullah ibn Jubayr (رضي الله عنه) at the head of the archers on the day of Uhud. There were fifty of them. And he said to them: 'If you see us being carried off by the birds, do not leave your position until I send for you. And if you see us defeating the enemy and trampling them, do not leave your position until I send for you.'" (Sahih al-Bukhari no. 3039)

The message of the Prophet ﷺ was absolutely clear: 'Do not leave your position. No matter what happens.'

The course of the battle

At first, the Muslims are winning. The Quraysh flee. The spoils begin to appear on the ground.

And that is when everything changes.

Seeing the apparent victory, 40 archers out of 50 decide to leave the hill to collect the spoils. They misinterpret the orders of the Prophet ﷺ. Abdullah ibn Jubayr reminds them of the command. They do not listen.

Khalid ibn al-Walid — not yet a Muslim, a military genius of the Quraysh — sees the hill emptying. This is the opening. He flanks the Muslim army and attacks from behind.

Disaster. Hamza falls as a martyr. Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr falls as a martyr. Seventy companions fall as martyrs. The Prophet ﷺ himself is wounded. His tooth is broken. Blood flows down his blessed face.

And all of this, due to disobedience to an order.

Abdullah ibn Jubayr — the forgotten hero

While his 40 men desert their post, Abdullah ibn Jubayr (رضي الله عنه) remains. With 9 loyal companions, he stays on the hill. He knows they will die. But he has received an order from the Prophet ﷺ.

He fights. He falls under the blows of cavalry. He and his 9 men die as martyrs, holding their position until their last breath. While the deserters may have saved their lives, Abdullah ibn Jubayr offered his to uphold a word.

Why this hill remains sacred

1. The order of the Prophet ﷺ is not to be interpreted. It is to be executed.
2. Disobedience to a clear command costs lives.
3. Steadfastness is better than opportunism.
4. It is better to die faithful than to live unfaithful to one's word.

The Quranic verse on Uhud

"And indeed, Allah fulfilled His promise to you when by His permission you were killing them until when you lost heart and disputed about the order and disobeyed after He showed you what you love." (Surah Al-Imran, 152)
