Abdullah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنهما was one of the greatest companions of the Prophet ﷺ and the son of the second caliph Umar. He is famous for his scrupulous following of the Sunnah.

Abdullah ibn Umar followed the Prophet ﷺ in the smallest details: where the Prophet ﷺ sat, where he walked, where he performed his ablutions — Ibn Umar repeated the same gesture in the same place out of love for his model.
Sahih al-Bukhari · Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd

Ibn Umar transmitted more than 2,630 hadiths, making him the greatest transmitter of the Sunnah after Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنهما.

Born around the 3rd year of the Prophethood (around 612 CE), he became Muslim as a child, with his father Umar. Having emigrated to Madinah with him at about the age of 10, and judged too young for Uhud (14 years old), he took part in the Trench, Khaybar, Mu'tah, the conquest of Makkah and the Farewell Hajj. He always refused the office of caliph or judge. He died in Makkah in the year 73 AH (692 CE), at about 84 years old.

When Marwan offered to have him proclaimed caliph, he replied:

> "By Allah, I would not like [the community] to submit to me for seventy years if a single man had to be killed by my sword."
Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd 4/169 · Siyar A'lam an-Nubala (hasan)

Aisha رضي الله عنها said of him:

> "No one followed the footsteps of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as exactly as Ibn Umar."
Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd
