Masjid Al-Rayah marks the spot where the banner (Rāyah) of the Prophet ﷺ was planted, on his order, by az-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam رضي الله عنه, during the conquest of Makkah (Fath Makkah) in the year 8 AH (630 CE).
It was from this strategic point at the top of a hill called Al-Hujun that the Prophet ﷺ commanded the peaceful advance of the Muslim troops towards the holy city.
Ibn Hisham · As-Sirah · Tabari
With 10,000 companions, the Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah as a humble victor, his head lowered on his mount out of humility. He had forbidden fighting except against 6 specific persons who had committed serious crimes.
The Prophet ﷺ entered the Haram, performed the Tawaf, and struck with a stick the 360 idols that surrounded the Kaaba while reciting:
> "The truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed, falsehood is ever bound to depart."
Quran 17:81 · Sahih al-Bukhari no. 4287
At the foot of the Kaaba, the Prophet ﷺ addressed the Quraysh who had persecuted him for 13 years:
> "What do you think I am going to do with you?"
They replied: "Good. You are a noble brother, son of a noble brother."
The Prophet ﷺ then declared: "Go, you are free."
Ibn Hisham · As-Sirah
It is one of the greatest acts of forgiveness in human history.
