Jannat al-Mu'alla (The Elevated Garden), also known as Maqbarat al-Hujun, is the oldest Muslim cemetery in the world, located on the heights of Makkah.
It is here that Sayyida Khadija bint Khuwaylid رضي الله عنها is buried, the first wife of the Prophet ﷺ, the first to embrace Islam, the first to believe in his Prophethood.
- Married to the Prophet ﷺ when she was 40 years old and he was 25
- Lived 25 years of exclusive marriage with him
- Gave him 6 children (al-Qasim, Abdullah, Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthum, Fatima رضي الله عنهم)
- Died in 619 CE, 3 years before the Hijra, during "the Year of Sorrow" (عام الحزن)
Aisha رضي الله عنها reports that the Prophet ﷺ used to say:
> "Allah has not given me in her place anyone better than her. She believed in me when people disbelieved, she trusted me when people accused me of lying, she supported me with her wealth when people deprived me."
Musnad Ahmad no. 24864
According to the classical chronicles, also buried at Al-Mu'alla are: Abdul-Muttalib (grandfather of the Prophet ﷺ), Abu Talib (his protective uncle), Aminah bint Wahb according to a minority tradition (most sources say she was buried at al-Abwa, between Makkah and Madinah, where she died), Al-Qasim and Abdullah (sons of the Prophet ﷺ).
As at Al-Baqi in Madinah, the graves are no longer marked by individual structures. The cemetery is still in use.
