Masjid Aisha, also called Masjid at-Tan'im, is located about 7 km north of Makkah, at the boundary of the Haram. It is the closest miqat for those who want to perform an Umrah from Makkah.
The name comes from Aisha bint Abi Bakr رضي الله عنها, the beloved wife of the Prophet ﷺ, who wanted to perform an Umrah during the Farewell Hajj but could not because of her menses.
When she was finally able to come out of that state, the Prophet ﷺ ordered her brother Abdul-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr to take her to At-Tan'im so that she could enter Ihram and perform her Umrah.
Sahih al-Bukhari no. 1556 · Sahih Muslim no. 1211
Aisha رضي الله عنها reports:
> "When we had completed the Hajj, the Prophet ﷺ sent me with Abdul-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr to At-Tan'im, and I performed the Umrah. He said: 'This is in place of your Umrah.'"
Sahih al-Bukhari no. 1556
The current mosque can accommodate 15,000 worshippers, with 2 minarets, separate areas for men and women, changing rooms for putting on Ihram, toilets and ablution facilities, and parking for pilgrims.
For pilgrims staying in Makkah or finishing their Hajj, it is the standard entry point for an additional Umrah. The rite: perform ablution and put on Ihram, pray 2 rak'ahs, make the niyyah for Umrah, recite the Talbiyah, return to the Haram for Tawaf.
