MASJID AS-SUQYA
The mosque of invocation for Medina.
The prayer that blesses the city
To the northwest of the Prophet's Mosque ﷺ, on the road that once led to Mecca and the battlefield of Badr, lies a mosque that few pilgrims speak of. But it is sacred for a specific reason:
It is here that the Prophet ﷺ prayed for Medina. It is here that he invoked Allah to bless this city. And his invocations remain valid until the Day of Judgment.
The authentic hadith
Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "O Allah, grant Medina twice the barakah that You granted to Mecca." (Sahih al-Bukhari no. 1885 · Sahih Muslim no. 1369)
And in another version: "Ibrahim sanctified Mecca and invoked for it. And I sanctify Medina as Ibrahim sanctified Mecca. And I invoke for its sa'a and mudd double what Ibrahim invoked for Mecca." (Sahih Muslim no. 1360)
The Prophet ﷺ invoked TWICE the blessing that Ibrahim invoked for Mecca. Therefore, Medina has, through prophetic invocation, double the barakah.
The other historical event: the army of Badr
Masjid As-Suqya is also the gathering point where the Prophet ﷺ inspected his army before departing for the Battle of Badr (year 2 of the Hijra). It is here that he checked each fighter, sent back the too young (like 'Umayr ibn Abi Waqqas who cried until he was allowed to stay), and made his invocations for victory at Badr.
Why the name
As-Suqya comes from the root s-q-y — which means "to water," "to give drink." The location of the mosque was near a well or spring where travelers would drink before leaving Medina.
The invocation you can make here
"O Allah, bless Medina. Place in Medina twice what You placed in Mecca as barakah."
This invocation is still valid. It was accepted by Allah fourteen centuries ago and the fruits of Medina still testify to it.
