OLD QUARTER (OLD TOWN)
Medina in the time of the Companions.
An Atmosphere More Than a Site
The "old quarter" of Medina is not a precise point — it is rather an area, or more accurately a vibe. When you stroll through certain narrow streets of the historic center, around the Prophet's Mosque ﷺ, you can still feel:
- Traditional stone and wood houses
- Alleys where the layout of the past can be discerned
- Small family businesses that resist modernization
- The different rhythm from the rest of the city
An Experience More Than a Monument
This site has no hadith. No famous battle. No tomb of a Companion. And yet, it has a unique value: it reminds you that Medina is not just a museum. It is a living city, inhabited, eaten in, slept in, and loved.
When you walk in one of these alleys, you walk where dozens of generations of Muslims have walked since the Prophet ﷺ until today. Families have prayed in these houses. Children have learned the Quran there. The dead have been mourned there. Marriages have been celebrated there.
It is this human continuity that is sacred.
Why Take the Time to Go There
1. To escape the spiritual tourism of the grand mosques
2. To hear Arabic spoken by the local Medinans, descendants of the Ansar
3. To taste traditional food in small family restaurants
4. To understand that Medina has never ceased to be the city of the Prophet ﷺ
