It was here, in the quarter of Banu Hashim, that on a Monday of the month of Rabi' al-Awwal in the Year of the Elephant (around 570 CE), an orphan named Muhammad ﷺ was born, son of Abdullah ibn Abdul-Muttalib and Aminah bint Wahb.
His mother later recounted that during her pregnancy she had seen a light come out of her that lit up the palaces of Syria.
> "That is the day on which I was born, and the day on which I was sent as a Messenger (or: on which the Revelation was sent down to me)."
Sahih Muslim no. 1162
His father Abdullah had died before his birth. The Prophet ﷺ spent his first years in the desert, among the Banu Sa'd, with his wet nurse Halima As-Sa'diya رضي الله عنها, then returned to his mother Aminah.
When his mother died while he was 6 years old, the Prophet ﷺ returned to this same house, under the protection of his grandfather Abdul-Muttalib, then of his uncle Abu Talib.
In the 20th century, during the expansion of the Sacred Mosque, the original building was demolished. The site is today occupied by the Makkah Library (Maktabat Makkah al-Mukarramah).
