JABAL SAL'
The Mountain of Khandaq.
The Strategic Sentinel
In the very heart of Medina, there is a mountain that many pilgrims overlook. Yet, without Jabal Sal', Medina might not have survived the year 5 AH.
It was here, around this low but strategic mountain, that the siege of Khandaq (the Trench) took place — one of the decisive battles in the history of Islam.
The Crisis
Year 5 AH. An immense coalition marches on Medina. 10,000 men. More than all the enemies faced until then. Led by Abu Sufyan. Against them, the Prophet ﷺ has only 3,000 men.
It was then that Salman al-Farsi (رضي الله عنه) proposed a strategy unknown to the Arabs: to dig a trench (khandaq) on the exposed northern flank. The Prophet ﷺ accepted. And all the companions began to dig, including the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself.
The Role of Jabal Sal'
Jabal Sal' became the command post of the Prophet ﷺ during the siege. The trench was dug from the west flank to the east flank of Jabal Sal' — the mountain served as a natural anchor point. The trench extended approximately 5.5 kilometers, 5 meters wide and 5 meters deep.
The Authentic Hadith
Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) narrates an unforgettable scene: "The Emigrants and the Ansar were digging the trench around Medina, carrying the earth on their backs. They said: 'We are those who have pledged allegiance to Muhammad, to remain in Jihad as long as we live.' And the Prophet ﷺ would respond to them by singing: 'O Allah, there is no good except the good of the Hereafter, so bless the Ansar and the Emigrants.'" (Sahih al-Bukhari no. 4099 · Sahih Muslim no. 1805)
The Miracle of the Rock
During the digging, the companions encountered an impossible rock to break. The Prophet ﷺ came, took the pickaxe, and struck the rock.
At the first strike, a spark flew: "Allahu Akbar! The keys of Sham (Syria) have been given to me. I see its white palaces."
At the second strike, another spark: "Allahu Akbar! The keys of Persia have been given to me. I see the white palaces of Mada'in."
At the third strike, a third spark: "Allahu Akbar! The keys of Yemen have been given to me. I see the gates of Sana'a." (Musnad Ahmad · Tirmidhi · authentic)
Three prophecies that all came true.
The Answered Invocations
The Prophet ﷺ made this famous invocation: "O Allah, Revealer of the Book, Swift to take account! Defeat the coalition!" (Sahih al-Bukhari no. 2933 · Sahih Muslim no. 1742)
And Allah answered: a cold windstorm arose, the coalition's tents collapsed, and the campfires went out. Abu Sufyan ordered a retreat. The siege ended without a major frontal battle. Medina was saved. Islam was saved.
The Quranic Verse
"O you who have believed! Remember the favor of Allah upon you when armies came to you, and We sent against them a wind and armies you did not see." (Surah Al-Ahzab, 9)
