JABAL 'AYR
The Sentinel of the South — The mountain that marks the sacred boundary of Medina.
A Silhouette in the Landscape
A few kilometers south of the Prophet's Mosque ﷺ, a stark, dark rocky mass rises, seemingly watching over the city. This is Jabal 'Ayr.
It is not a famous mountain like Uhud. It is not a place where people come to pray. Yet, without it, Medina would not be Medina. Because it is this mountain, and the one facing it to the north (Jabal Thawr), that delineate the invisible borders of a territory that the Prophet ﷺ himself declared sacred.
The Hadith of the Sacred Limits
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Medina is sacred, what lies between 'Ayr and Thawr. Whoever commits an innovation therein or gives refuge to an innovator, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all of mankind." (Sahih al-Bukhari 1867 · Sahih Muslim 1370)
The Hadith That Tells the Truth
Here is the hadith that the majority forget. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Uhud is a mountain that loves us and that we love. It is at one of the gates of Paradise. And 'Ayr is a mountain that hates us and that we hate. It is at one of the gates of Hell."
That is why people do not come to pray at Jabal 'Ayr. And yet — this is the wisdom — Allah willed that this unloved mountain serve as a boundary to the most beloved territory after Mecca.
Rules of the Haram of Medina
- Prohibition of cutting trees
- Prohibition of hunting game
- Prohibition of any religious innovation (bid'ah)
Note of Sincerity
Many sites present Jabal 'Ayr as a revered place. This is false. The strongest hadith concerning it states the opposite. It is this nuance that makes the beauty of the place.
