THE LARGEST FLAG OF MEDINA
The Shahada that Flutters in the Wind — The gigantic mast that greets every pilgrim entering the city of the Prophet ﷺ.
The Moment You Realize Where You Are Arriving
You are driving from the airport. Or from Mecca. You are tired. And then, suddenly, on the horizon, something rises in the sky. An immense mast. Taller than all the surrounding buildings. At the top, a green flag that waves in the desert wind. And at the heart of this green, in white letters, six Arabic words — the most powerful phrase of humanity:
لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله
At that precise moment, everything becomes clear. You are no longer traveling. You are arriving.
The Color Green
In Islamic tradition, green is the color of Paradise. Allah describes in the Quran the garments of the blessed: "They will wear fine silk and brocade garments of green." (Surah Al-Insan, 21). The dome that crowns the grave of the Prophet ﷺ has been green since the Ottoman era.
The Shahada
At the center of the flag, in elegant white Thuluth calligraphy: "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever has as their last words Lā ilāha illā'Llāh will enter Paradise." (Abu Dawud no. 3116)
The Sword
Beneath the Shahada, a white sword symbolizes justice, strength in truth, and the defense of faith.
Why It Touches So Much in Medina
Here you read the Shahada, and a few kilometers away, the Prophet ﷺ rests under the Green Dome. You see written "Muhammadun rasūlu'Llāh", and you are literally in his city. At that moment, the words are no longer just words. You do not just read the Shahada. You feel it.
