WELL BI'R AL-IHN (AL-YUSAYRA)

The well with multiple names.

One well, two names, one story

This ancient well located near Quba has two names in classical sources: Bi'r al-Ihn and Al-Yusayra.

Al-Samhudi mentions this well among those where the Prophet ﷺ would have drunk or performed ablutions during his visits to the Quba area. (As-Samhudi · Wafa' al-Wafa)

A fragmentary tradition

The sources regarding this well are less developed than for Bi'r 'Idhq or Bi'r al-Khatim. However, it is part of the network of historical wells that dotted the Quba area during the prophetic era.

The Prophet ﷺ, who visited Quba every Saturday according to the hadith of Bukhari (no. 1193), passed by these wells regularly.

Why this well matters

Even without a grand famous narrative, this type of well reminds us of an essential truth: the Medina of the Prophet ﷺ was interwoven with water. Each well had its owner, its story, its beneficiaries. The Prophet ﷺ personally knew the majority of these wells — it was his daily city.
