FORTRESS OF KA'B IBN AL-ASHRAF

The poet who challenged the Prophet ﷺ.

The Hidden Enemy

Not all battles of Islam are fought on the fields of Badr or Uhud. Some are waged in the shadows, through words, through betrayal. And one of them took place in this fortress, southeast of Medina.

Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf was a Jewish leader of the Banu Nadir tribe. Wealthy. Influential. And a formidable poet. But above all, a fierce enemy of Islam — an enemy who wielded the most dangerous weapon of his time: poetry.

The Crime of Ka'b

After the Muslim victory at Badr (2 AH), Ka'b traveled to Mecca to incite the Quraysh to vengeance. He composed poems to mourn the Meccan dead of Badr, and poems to insult the Prophet ﷺ and slander the Muslim women of Medina.

At that time, poetry was not entertainment. It was a weapon of war.

The Authentic Hadith

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Who will take charge of Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf? For he has harmed Allah and His Messenger." (Sahih al-Bukhari no. 4037 · Sahih Muslim no. 1801)

Muhammad ibn Maslamah (رضي الله عنه) stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, do you want me to kill him?" The Prophet ﷺ replied: "Yes."

Muhammad ibn Maslamah then said: "Allow me to say what is necessary (to approach him)." The Prophet ﷺ agreed. This permission is a famous theological exception — the Prophet ﷺ permitted the use of tactical deception in the context of a legitimate war operation against a declared enemy.

The Operation

Muhammad ibn Maslamah, accompanied by a few companions (including Abu Na'ila — the milk brother of Ka'b), came to the fortress of Ka'b at night. They pretended to come to complain about the Prophet ﷺ to gain his trust. Ka'b came down. At the opportune moment, the companions attacked him. Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf was killed that night. (Sahih al-Bukhari no. 4037)

The Legal Context

Ka'b had a pact with the Muslims (the Sahifah). He broke this pact through his slander and incitement to war. The breaking of the pact transforms a protected individual into a declared enemy. The targeted elimination of a declared enemy during war is legitimate.

Deception in war is explicitly permitted: "War is deception." (Sahih al-Bukhari no. 3030 · Sahih Muslim no. 1740)

This operation was the first decisive act of prophetic justice against the internal conspirators in Medina.
