QURANIC INSCRIPTIONS ON THE ROCK (UHUD)
The Silent Trace of the Companions.
A Stone, Words, A Mystery
On the slopes of Mount Uhud, or nearby, visitors and local authorities mention ancient Arabic inscriptions carved into the rock, traditionally attributed to the companions of the Prophet ﷺ.
Which Verses Are Engraved
The identifiable inscriptions often refer to the verse of the martyrs: "And do not think of those who have been killed in the way of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision." (Surah Al-Imran, 169)
This verse, directly related to the Battle of Uhud, is one of the most naturally engraved on the stones of the site. It is believed to have been revealed shortly after this battle, as a consolation for the families of the martyrs.
Honest Precision Needed
What is Confirmed:
- Ancient inscriptions exist on the stones of Uhud.
- Arabic paleography allows for dating some engravings to several centuries.
- Tradition attributes them to the companions through millennia of popular devotion.
- No classical sahih source confirms a specific companion having engraved a particular verse.
- Some inscriptions may be Umayyad, Abbasid, or more recent.
What is Uncertain:
Why Visit
1. They embody the love of Muslims for the martyrs for fourteen centuries.
2. The engraved verses are authentic — they are the words of Allah in the Quran.
3. They invite meditation — the stones witnessed the Prophet ﷺ wounded, Hamza fallen, and companions dying by the dozens.
