ʿUbayda ibn al-Harith ibn al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) was of the Prophet's ﷺ family and one of the first Muslims of Mecca (Ibn Saʿd).
On the morning of Badr, he went out to duel with Hamza and ʿAli. He was badly wounded in the leg and carried back to the ranks (Abu Dawud 2665). It was about them that the verse was revealed: "These are two opponents who dispute concerning their Lord" (al-Hajj, 22:19; Bukhari 3966).
He died on the way back, at as-Safra', aged 63, and was buried there (Ibn Saʿd; Ibn Hisham). He is one of the 14 martyrs of Badr.
The present location, about 1.5 km from Al-Hamra, comes from local tradition and the village's official sign.
At the cemetery, we greet the dead as the Prophet ﷺ taught: "Peace be upon you, people of these dwellings, believers and Muslims; and we will join you, if Allah wills" (Muslim 975).
