The cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet ﷺ.

The Fourth Caliph

Ali ibn Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) was the fourth caliph (35-40 AH / 656-661 CE). Cousin of the Prophet ﷺ, son-in-law (husband of Fatima), father of the two grandsons Hassan and Hussayn.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "You are to me what Aaron was to Moses — except that there is no prophet after me." (Sahih al-Bukhari no. 4416 · Sahih Muslim no. 2404)

The Hero Who Slept in the Prophet's ﷺ Bed

On the night of the Hijra, Ali slept in the Prophet's ﷺ bed to deceive the 40 assassins of Quraysh — risking his life to save that of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (Sîrah of Ibn Hisham)

The Bearer of the Banner

At Khaybar, the Prophet ﷺ said: "I will give this banner tomorrow to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love, and Allah will grant victory by his hands." (Sahih al-Bukhari no. 3009 · Sahih Muslim no. 2406)

He gave it to Ali. The fortress of Khaybar fell.
