HOUSE OF SA'D IBN KHAYTHAMAH (DAR AL-'UZZAB)
The House of the Singles.
The Inn of the Emigrants
When the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr arrived in Quba, the first Meccan emigrants were already there, settled for weeks. But where did they sleep?
Most of them stayed at Sa'd ibn Khaythamah (رضي الله عنه), a wealthy companion from the Banu 'Amr ibn 'Awf. His house was nicknamed "Dar al-'Uzzab" — "the House of the Singles" — because it primarily hosted unmarried emigrants who did not yet have families in Medina.
The Prophet ﷺ also stayed there
According to tradition, after a few nights with Kulthum ibn al-Hidm, the Prophet ﷺ also stayed with Sa'd ibn Khaythamah for several days.
Why this choice? Because Sa'd was a young, single man — as the Prophet ﷺ did not want to impose on the women of more established families. And because this house was already home to the Muhajirun — it was natural to be with them. (Ibn Hisham · As-Samhudi)
Sa'd, the Martyr of Badr
Sa'd ibn Khaythamah was an exceptional man. During the Battle of Badr (2 AH), there was a poignant scene with his father Khaythamah.
Both wanted to fight. But only one mount was available. The father said to the son: "Stay with your family — let me go."
Sa'd refused: "If it were not for Paradise, I would have yielded. But it is Paradise that I seek."
They drew lots. Sa'd won. He went to Badr — and died a martyr there. (Sîrah of Ibn Hisham)
His father Khaythamah later fought at Uhud and also fell as a martyr there.
