Preparing your Umrah during the disruption

FAQ: cancelled flights, Umrah, Jeddah, Medina, Riyadh

Is Madinah airport open?

Yes. As of the check on 17 October 2026 (5:50 a.m., Makkah time), Madinah airport (MED) is operating almost normally: 2 minutes average delay and 4 flights cancelled. Flights are arriving from Istanbul, Cairo, Algiers, Casablanca, Doha and Abu Dhabi. Still, check your flight with your airline before leaving.

Are flights to Jeddah still operating?

Yes, Jeddah airport (JED) is open and the situation is improving: 7% cancellations on the morning of 17 October, compared with 15% on the 14th. Emirates is still cancelling its flights to Jeddah, and Etihad some flights until 19 October. France formally advises against Jeddah airport, even for a layover. Confirm your flight with your airline.

Does Wizz Air fly to Jeddah?

Not reliably. Many travellers are receiving cancellations on Milan and Rome to Jeddah until February, and Wizz Air has made no official announcement. If your flight is cancelled, you do not have to accept points: you can ask for a cash refund or another flight.

When will Riyadh airport reopen?

Riyadh airport (RUH) is closed until midnight on 17 October, Saudi time. Confirmation (reopening or extension) is expected that evening; we update this status every morning. Several airlines have suspended Riyadh for longer, for example Air France-KLM until the end of October and Air Cairo until 20 October. If you have a layover in Riyadh, contact your airline.

My flight is cancelled: what are my rights?

If your flight departs from the European Union, or arrives in the European Union with a European airline, European regulation CE 261/2004 applies. You choose between a refund of your ticket (within 7 days) or re-routing to your destination, and the airline must look after you while you wait (meals, hotel if necessary). Fixed compensation (for example 400 € for a Rome-Jeddah flight, 600 € for a Milan-Jeddah flight, depending on distance) is unlikely here: an armed conflict is generally considered an extraordinary circumstance. Keep all your receipts and make your claim in writing to the airline.
